One of my earliest memories is of my mother singing old folk songs and hymns. She accompanied herself on either the piano or a ukulele that she acquired by saving S&W stamps. I often sat with her on the piano bench and eagerly sang along. When I was six or seven, she taught me how to play the ukulele. At that time I also heard a man playing old-time fiddle music and I was hooked - I just had to have a fiddle.
Every day I begged my parents for a fiddle. They said they’d buy me one if I learned to play ten songs on the ukulele. I took that ukulele with me everywhere, even when doing chores. Dad staked off an area for me to chop weeds, and I’d get paid 25 cents when done. I tried to work hard in hopes of earning a quarter that day. But more often than not, I’d sit on a log playing and singing the old songs. Little did I know, I was establishing employment patterns that have stuck with me to this day.
One by one, I added songs to my cherished song list. I anxiously performed them for my dad in a nightly audition. My practice eventually paid off – they bought me a fiddle for my eighth birthday! Now, more than forty years later, I’m still adding treasured old songs to my repertoire, and feel truly blessed to share them with others.
